valve and seat lapping
Trying to lap in the valves on a 255. All the seats have a rather narrow pattern on the valves and seats. Other than minor pitting all the seats are this way and do not look as if there was a previous problem. Is this pattern sufficient. Thanks Bill

Re: valve and seat lapping
The contact area you have is ideal. It would be better if the contact area was centered on the valve face, but I would not hesitate to run them that way.

Re: valve and seat lapping
I like a 3 angle valve job 20/45/060" intake and 15/45/60 .075" exhaust with the seat right up near the edge on the exhaust, this keeps the exhaust valve cooler. Now after you have the valves lapped in, under cut the intake valve with a 20 deg angle up to the lapped area. The exhaust you can leave stock. Use a piece of 400 paper to break the edges of the valve face angles and the seat angles. This may sound like allot of work, but will pay off in longevity of the valve job, plus a little better breathing.

Any kind of pitting & the seats should be resurfaced with stone or cutter !& valves refaced. Cheers Tony |
