Out for a drive on a nice day
I took my 45 jailbar truck out to run some errands and to visit a friend. Here is a photo taken during my travels. I am still having charging problems,which I may describe later, but I can take it on short jaunts and make it home. Good to get it out for a decent drive today to the post office, Best Buy and to visit my friend!

we went to a V8 club event Saturday here in the sunny but windy south. Drove our 40 woodie. great looking truck-post problem with charging ,I know some one here can help you

Wow that is one great looking truck, as far as your charging issue you'll get it sorted eventually. Make sure you have good grounds to start, I did a little overkill on mine and ran a couple of extra flat braided cables to frame and block from battery. As I learned on my Ford 8N tractor all connections must be clean,bright and tight.

Thanks for all the complements. When I saw it for sale, I had to buy it. It was part of a package deal and both vehicles needed some attention. I think I paid a little too much and have spent the last year sorting them out. I will get the electrical problem addressed eventually.
I have had some grear help from Barners so far and have learned a lot about charging systems. It charges 6.17 volts to the battery and I cannot for the life of me figure out why it is so low, but given how much of a novice I am at electrics, that is not surprising. |

Not sure what you mean by contact spring unless you are referring to the voltage regulator. While I say it charges 6.17 at the battery, I don't think the charge is getting to the battery. I think that is the voltage reading from the battery. I have not checked the voltage with the headlights on, however.

I tried that yesterday in my 42 Fordor. A local antique car museum has a 41 Ford on display and they said it was okay if I brought my 42 up an took pictures of mine beside theirs.
It didnt go so well. I had some trash in the fuel line from somewhere (filter just out of the tank and another just before the carb). The car would idle but not take throttle, and at one point it just quit. Luckily I made it off the road and into a safe driveway, I was out in the country. After some cranking and choking it finally started but would only idle. Finally pulled the air cleaner off and revved the motor and covered the carb with my hand and got it to run wide open okay. I limped it back towards home like that (wide open or coasting), that was kinda interesting. Playing with the choke the whole time I finally found a choke position where it would run semi okay not full throttle. After about 2 miles of this it sucked whatever it had in it through the carb and started running normally. I went ahead and went back home. I'll get those pictures next week I hope. |

I had my truck out again last weekend to give it some exercise and ran out of gas. The wire connection to my gas tank gets loose under the cab and the gas gauge reads 1/4 full. This is the second time that has happened. Once fooled, twice fooled, I guess. At least I wasn't far from home!

Hi there, You need to test the generator and voltage regulator settings. Connect an accurate test voltmeter between ground and "B" terminal on the voltage regulator. Run engine at approx. 2000 RPM for more than a minute or two and voltage should be at 7.5 to 7.7 volts. Anything lower is too low. Check all main wiring connections in vehicle are clean and tight such as battery terminals, starter solenoid terminals, ammeter terminals, ground cables, etc. A fully charged battery at rest should be 6.3 volts. If you don't know anything about voltage regulators then don't remove the cover or mess with it. There are three units inside the regulator, the voltage regulator, current regulator and the cut out. All have various settings and adjustments. Get back to me with that reading. Regards, Kevin.

I have run many tests, cleaned all connections, replaced field coils and brushes on generator and put in a new voltage regulator. I have had help from a couple of people on FB and locally and still cannot figure out my problem. A local generator shop has tested generator and VR and both are supposedly ok. I don't have a great multimeter, but it works.
Battery is 6.4. Reading at Arm post on generator at idle is about 1, goes up to 6.5 at higher rpm. Reading at field post on generator is 0 at idle and at speed. Reading at BAT terminal is around 6.5 when running and when truck is not running. No noticeable change from when it is running to when it is not. I had replaced the VR and no change. I put the old VR back on, and am running it now. No change from previous reading at the dash gauge. It shows a slight discharge at idle and greater discharge when the lights are on or the brake lights are on. I have tested all wires with ohm meter and run jumper wires from all generator connections to the VR and from BAT terminal to solenoid. No change. I am an electrical novice, but I have learned a lot from this process. I have not found the problem, though. One friend who is helping thinks the problem is inside the cab. I wonder about that, but the dash wiring harness needs replacing, so I ordered a new one from Tyree Harris today. I have some other shop manual tests to run, supplied by a FBer, but need a second person to help with those, so may be able to get to them this weekend. |

You are only guessing and so are your friends. Do the test I have outlined above and that's all. You need to have some revs up when testing a generator. They don't charge at engine idle speed so testing at that speed is a total waste of time. Regards, Kevin.

I tested it when revved and the most it did was 6.5 volts.
