Re: Slide in pickup conversion
As midgetracer said, attractiveness is personal preference. But the oval window coupe just doesn't look "right" to me - maybe because the window is slanted while the rest of the turret's lines are vertical or horizontal. Anyway, I do prefer "one-seaters" (coupes, roadsters, etc) to sedans, phaetons, etc - to each, his own. |

Don't think Ford ever did it but some 30s cars had factory-made boxes in the trunk - factory installed and/or dealer accessory. Some were even on slides like a drawer - when the box wasn't needed, just slide it in and close the trunk lid! |

Re: Slide in pickup conversion
I haven't been able to find proof that dealers offered them with new cars as an accessory based on assumption alone it wouldn't be far fetched...if it was then this box is being refurbished and used..might just do it anyway..

Like I said, I don't think Ford ever offered them. But here's a couple "Brand-X" () examples. More info here: http://home.znet.com/p1937/Ute.htm |

Re: Slide in pickup conversion
I've been searching for proof that it was a period accessory. That would allow me to "restore' the car and the box so it would be period correct...I dont want to do a patina car either, this one is too straight for that...I was thinking commercial, black with a black top and black wheels and black walls..

Ah, OK - I thought you were looking for evidence that coupe-pickups were manufacturer (if not Ford) sponsored, rather than just homemade. AFAIK, there was no such Ford-approved accessory. There may have been non-Ford aftermarket kits that dealers might or might not have sold - I think proof of that will be hard to find. I guess it depends on your goals for the car. You can easily show coupe-pickups are period correct, but proving your particular box is a period accessory is another matter. I think of commercial vehicles as attention-getters - mobile billboards for the business. So I'd probably paint the body and wheels a bright color (red, yellow, etc) with black fenders and top and wide whitewalls. Just my opinion but it's your car - you should do it YOUR way. |

Re: Slide in pickup conversion
This one popped up on eBay today. It looks homemade, but rather nicely done.
