Increase Speed on AA
What is needed to increase the speed on a AA? 1930 presently has 5:14 to 1.
How much speed increase can I expect? Thanks for your time. Joe |

Re: Increase Speed on AA
If you have the short WB "AA" ,try to find a Warford over, direct & underdrive aux trans. It will fit in place of the coupling shaft or Dual-High trans. You should end up with a gear ratio fairly close to that of a stock "A".Because of the straight-cut gears,it will be noisy in UD or OD. 3-speed Warfords were also made for the "TT" as well, but they are different.

Re: Increase Speed on AA
There are several configurations of warfords. The 28-29 for use behind a 3 speed transmission had 6 spline input and output shafts. Late 29s for behind a 4 speed ,I think, had a 10 spline input and a 6 spline output shaft. The 30-31s had 10 spline input and output shafts. The internal gears are different between the 28-29 and the 30-31. The overdrive slide gear is the same for both.
I think that Mitchell can make up a unit for the AA truck.

Re: Increase Speed on AA
Good luck finding an AA warford these days. Very scarce. Not sure why you need to go any faster, it should do nearly 50 mph with the 5.14s if you push it hard. Don't forget you have alot of mass in the wheels, flaps, tube, and tires, multiply that by 6 if you're running duals. In my experience, these things don't run very smoothly at high speeds. My best advice is to load it up, put it to work, and enjoy the slow ride. The topper in my avatar is on my AA.

Re: Increase Speed on AA
I know the model a school bus "Huff n Puff" has some sort of Mitchell overdrive unit. You might call Mitchell and ask if they offer anything for the AA. Don't expect it to be cheap though.

Re: Increase Speed on AA
Given the scarceness of the Warford tranny, perhaps the Ford 4-speed/OD tranny would be the easiest / cheapest way to do it ?
Are you actually planning to haul with this truck or just run empty ( no load) ? If you are going to pull loads with it, I don't think I would opt for the Mitchell OD... it might not be up to the torque loading ? SC Frank |

Re: Increase Speed on AA
The top one is a Warford and the bottom one is a Brown-Lipe, both 3 speeds.

Re: Increase Speed on AA
I run 650/20's (34" diameter) on the rear of my BB four cylinder with a 5:14. With the speedometer correction it shows 46 mph when it is running 50. Runs 50 very well! I don't plan to go any faster than 50. Why? That said, I would love to find a Warford if only for the novelty but I doubt that the Warford would work in high without a tailwind. A very experienced friend of mine cautions that when you start changing things, it may cause problems "down the line" in other systems. Like going 60 is pushing the brakes and probably the handling etc. not to mention the effect of wind resistance.

Re: Increase Speed on AA
I run 6.50s on the rears also, running duals on the 31-33 style rims with the re-inforcing rib, no rubbing issues between the duals. Running 6.00s on the front to prevent rubbing on brake rods at full lock. This setup works just fine for me, but I think the F150 trans would be a good match in an AA.

Re: Increase Speed on AA
I've been told by a few old timers that if you put a dual high trans in backwards it acts like an OD. It seems like it would make sense, it also seems like a pretty good way to break things but who knows. Maybe I'll give it a show some day, I have enough parts laying around
