MMO, 3-in-1, motor oil--they all seem to work. They're not picky.

I've always heard automatic transmission fluid

Unless the seals are neoprene a petro based oil attacks rubber. Pure silicon lube does not attack rubber....so you may want to consider it

Think the original seals are paper, and the paddle is felt.

I found the fluid lubricants to not be thick enough to help seal the paddle. Distributor cam lube is what finally worked for me. It is thick enough to help seal but not so thick as to harden up in the cold.

Seem to remember an article in Skinned Knuckles or a Model A venue that said to use Vasolene
Good luck,

Put silicone grease in mine in 1985. Worked fine after sitting from 1986 to 2009. $99.83 cheaper than Ficken, but I have no doubt they provide an excellent service.

Vaseline has worked well for the numerous ones I've rebuilt.
