Not Model A related
A short while back I mentioned getting one of those gadgets that plugs into the car's computer and one of the Barner's suggested a brand. I bought it and ran the codes and decided it was most likely a vacuum leak. I had my car looked at by three mechanics. Last night I decided to poke around under the hood and low and behold, I found it---bigger than snot! It was a large hose that plugs into the duct that connects to the air filter and my gas mileage suddenly jumped from between 11 and 12 to between 18 and 20---country driving about 45 without cruise control. What I don't understand is why the three mechanics didn't find it, but was discovered by one of the world's worst guys to have working under a hood----me! With the Model A, I was forced to get involved with the mechanics because I felt uneasy about some of the so called mechanics that were totally clueless with the Model A. I guess I'll have to start getting involved with the modern car as well-----yikes! JMHO

If the scanner doesn't pull a specific code thats tells the mechanic exactly what is wrong, some techs just don't want or know where to start looking..

Re: Not Model A related
I sometimes think that some-----not all mechanics----- just want to milk the codes by just replacing things one at a time. Not a whole lot of money in sticking a vacuum hose into a hole!

Glad that it worked out for you. I,too, am intimidated by all the modern electronics but many people tell me to break it into a bunch of simple components. Like eating an elephant "one bite at a time".
