32 Model B exhaust gasket question
I'm fighting an exhaust leak at the end of the exhaust manifold to the first pipe heading towards the muffler.
I've ordered a new B-5250 pipe from Macs and their website says there is a gasket or coupling that goes between the manifold and pipe that is available at most parts stores. What normally goes in there? A flat washer made of normal exhaust donut material? Any suggestions? Last edited by Kevinsrodshop; 03-05-2014 at 04:34 PM. |

Re: 32 Model B exhaust gasket question
I don't think there was a gasket originally (none is shown in the Green Bible) but I use one along with some gasket cement. Support the muffler/pipe with a floor jack when you put it in. If I remember correctly it is possible to get the B5251 clamp on upside down (the angled surface is slightly different). Remember this is the same clamp used on the Model A so some of the Model A suppliers may make a gasket (even if it wasn't there originally). It has been a long time and I welcome corrections to my memory.

Re: 32 Model B exhaust gasket question
Here is a lesson learned by some of us old timers. The exhaust manifold should have metal glands stuck in the manifold thru the gasket into the block. This prevents warping of the manifold. As for the exhaust pipe, support it with something and carefully examine the fit against the manifold. It should fit all the way around and if it does, it should not leak when the clamps are installed.

I should probably give the end of the manifold a good scrub with a wire brush and make sure its smooth and clean.

Re: 32 Model B exhaust gasket question
A&L Parts Specialties of Canton, CT (860-693-0112) offers the correct B-5231 copper and asbestos (likely an asbestos substitute) washer for this specific application. It is countersunk and works as it should and as no amount of adjustment can.
