Default 1937 ford pickup pilot bearing

I'am working on 85 hp 21 stud flathead installing and the new pilot bearing is thicker than the one took out, so it about 1/8!" Out from the crank is that ok or should I get one that sits even with the crank

All the ones I've replaced were pressed in to the flywheel. Yours is in the crank?

All I've ever installed are in the flywheel.

If its sticking out as long as it does not hit the splines on the input shaft it should be okay otherwise it will try and turn the input shaft with the clutch in and you will not be able to shift the trans. Is the new pilot bearing a brass bushing or the more modern bearing type. The later bearing type have a little lip that sticks out when they are driven in. Do you have a bearing number we could lookup to verify it is the correct one? Did you try slipping it onto the input shaft before installing it. Always do that on the bench to make sure you have the correct size pilot bearing before you try and install the trans.
