Need advice on methods used to straighten a 35-6 horn/light rod.
& Advice on methods used (if possible) to remove & replace the light rod from the flange.

Re: Bent Horn-Light Rod
I re worded my request for info on removing replacing the horn rod in post 1.
The shaft needs to be kept straight when reversing the bend or else a new bend direction is created. The concept is good but the hand held tool will not be adequate. I like the idea of using a micrometer....... I am thinking of splitting an old steering shaft to make a form die to press the rod into. Then making a second one with with a slight bend to over stretch the rod into using the arbor press, and checking w/ the micrometer and v-blocks on the mill table........ Still pondering the dilemma

Re: Bent Horn-Light Rod
A piece of angle iron the same length provides a great tool to help straighten and see where it is still bent

Re: Bent Horn-Light Rod
It has been a while since I picked up a bow, but I'm pretty sure that arrow shafts are solid, not tubular like the light switch rod, which makes straightening it a different proposition.

Re: Bent Horn-Light Rod
You should not be trying equate straightening an aluminum arrow whether solid or tubular with straightening a thin wall steel tube.
Have straightened similar steel tubing in the past using a heat and shrink method along with a center mandrel.

Re: Bent Horn-Light Rod
I believe modern arrow shafts are hollow and most are made from aluminum. Some high tech ones are made from carbon fiber, but I believe most are hollow tubes.

Re: Bent Horn-Light Rod
The arrows, aka bolts, used on my modern crossbow are hollow carbon fiber. The aluminum versions available for my bow are also hollow. I believe that's the norm today for crossbows and long bows used for hunting.

Re: Bent Horn-Light Rod
Mine was only slightly bent. I laid the rod in the 90 degree angle of the iron. Found were it was bent and flipped the bent part 180 from the inside angle. I taped the straight part down using wide masking tape and worked my way down towards the bent part. Gently and pushed in towards the 90 degree angle and ever so slightly working the rod to get it to lay down flat. I kept taping it down as I worked. Seemed to have done the trick, but like I said, it was only very slightly bent.
Good luck |
