Default cleaning braided brake linings

I have a vintage race car with (a V-8 "60" engine, and) braided drum brake linings. I want to clean any oil/grease out of them. My vintage race buddy says they should be "soaked" to get the oil out. Would white vinegar be a suitable cleaner, assuming the shoes are not aluminum?
Thanks!

Never heard of vinegar being used to remove grease. Learn something new daily. If you have to use them I would suggest using brake cleaner then wash let dry & bake. Then clean again with brake cleaner. Never tried it but that is what I would try.

Check with your local BIG truck repair shop.some have a in-closed steam cleaning cabinet for cleaning parts and oil soaked Brakes when the seal fails.
I have had it done on one of the Internationals once very very effective.
Just a thought.

See if you can get some Chlorinated Brake Cleaner. The Unchlorinated stuff is junk. Gunk chemicals still makes the good stuff.
