metalurigist/gasketologists..Q
I have some nos old head gaskets with 'curled' copper , but otherwise undamaged/good condition. Is there a practical way to remove/treat this copper curl or just toss the affected gaskets ! Anneal ?
I'm aware that this condition maybe 'pull down' to conform, if carefully installed, but do not want to take chance of that 'maybe'. Last edited by hardtimes; 09-17-2014 at 01:37 PM. Reason: forgot pics...again ! |

Yes, they can be annealed by heating with a torch hot enough for it to "sizzle" when placed in cold water. I generally use a soft flame and when I see the first hint of bluing I stop and submerge. The copper will become very soft and pliable and you should be able to move it around with your hand.

I would be more concerned with how far the green corrosion has eaten into the copper.

Pete, some time back, I asked here for input regarding copper oxide/copper gaskets. One of the guys here gave this great idea to try. Mix salt with lemon juice ...and start rubbing. Do not forget to negate acidic action when clean,eh ! Wow, something that actually worked, as suggested ! This one will now get that treatment if copper will lay down, as suggested. Hm, now need to go one of the nightly walks that we did till very recently (she broke leg , so life has changed !) where all the lemons needed are hanging over sidewalks ! |
