Default Very Tight Main Bearing Bolts

I have a 29 A engine that was rebuilt many years ago, but never installed or run. I'm taking it down (very carefully) to see if the bearings are stuck.

Are the first and second main bearing bolts suppose to be very hard to turn all the way out. I have to use a long breaker bar to turn the bolts at all. They are about two revolutions out, but still hard to turn.

Any thoughts?

George

Do you have the cotter pins out and a wrench on the nuts up top?

This is my first time into this engine. I didn't see the nuts and cotter pin up top. Thanks. You solved my problem.

If you have worked on modern engines it's understandable that you would not expect to find a nut at the other end of a main bearing cap bolt. Don't feel bad, you can get a lot of help from kind people here.

If you l;ook close at the square head on one corner you will see a little bump --that is so you can know the alignment of the cotter hole from the bottom

Don't worry about asking questions

BTW, that bolt bump that Kurt mentioned should face straight in at the crank or straight out away from the crank for the cotter hole to be in a good location.

Hey George,
Well , 'problem' may not be altogether 'solved', at this point.
That is, if you were able to turn the bolt with breaker bar as you described....what is left of the cotter pin may exist inside the bolt. You still may experience somewhat hard time getting bolt back out of block/cap.
