I did the same as Jack shaft. Aluminium gear was being rattled against crank gear by harmonic crankshaft vibrations at several stages in the driving revolution range. The rubber harmonic balancer pulley removed most of this chatter and it may be my imagination that I can still just hear some noise in both our cars, because passengers cannot hear it.
