Default Door Check Strap Brackets

should the door check strap bracket plates be painted black or nickle plated (E28 open pickup)

Neither. As noted in the standards, they were painted to match the door check straps. It's worth noting that the early plates (through mid '28?) had "teeth" along one edge to better grip the strap. I believe your later ones could be modified to match if you can borrow an original to copy.

I would have already if I had one. They look like a saw tooth configuration along one edge.
