Ring gear direction?
I need to install a new ring gear on a 226 flywheel. Does the bevel on the teeth face the block or face the pressure plate side?
Appreciate it! JB |

Re: Ring gear direction?
From what direction does the bendix engage the gear?

Re: Ring gear direction?
I just did bone a couple weeks ago. The bevel faces the rear as the bendix is on a long shaft behind the flywheel. A new ring gear is hard to find for these. I got mine from the ring gear guru, Al Suering in upstate NY. Flywheel in the freezer, ring gear in trhe oven like a toothy pizza.... It just sat on the ledge and as it cooled, it shrunk on like it's supposed to. Perfect fit.

Re: Ring gear direction?
But it needs to face the front if you are using a modern pre engage starter.

Re: Ring gear direction?
But Lawrie, you live South of the equator as well.... does the starter spin clockwise or ccw? And from which end?

Re: Ring gear direction?
I heated the gear in the oven for about 45 minutes at 400 and it wouldn’t go on. There is a small lip on the flywheel that the gear has to clear. I had it on the granite counter in the kitchen so I was afraid to go after it with a hammer.
I am debating trying again tomorrow by putting the flywheel in the freezer or just take it back to the machine shop and let them do it. These 226 ring gears are hard to come by and I don’t want to damage it or only be able to get it on half way. JB |

Re: Ring gear direction?
I used to install ring gears with a torch.
Use vise grips to hold the ring. Use the acetylene torch to heat the ring very hot, not enough to change color. Rose bud tip... Only need to heat 1/2 of the ring. Drop it on to the flywheel. A couple minutes later, brass punch and hammer, in case the ring isn't fully seated. It may work to use the BBQ, or the fire place. Or higher oven temp. Karl |

Re: Ring gear direction?
Well I put the flywheel in the freezer and the gear in the oven and no luck? I worried over the weekend afraid I had the wrong flywheel. Took it to the machine shop today, and Tommy installed it in two minutes with a torch. Good to go.
The build continues….. JB |
