Power staplers
I am going to install the upholstery and top on my 29 phaeton, hopefully this summer. I have a manual stapler, however it would be much easier to use a power stapler. There are compressed air staplers and electric staplers available at companies like Harbor Freight for about the same price ~$20. I know HF tools aren't the highest quality, but for doing one vehicle it seems like they would work OK. I would appreciate it if Fordbarners that have used one type or the other, post their pros and cons with them. I have a large air compressor, so both options are available to me.

Re: Power staplers
I haven't used an electric stapler - I have a compressed air operated one which works more than just fine. Almost too good. If I'm stapling into something soft, the staples sometimes cut through the fabric. If that happens, I run it through the regulator and drop the pressure back.
BTW, For an application like the top of a car, I'd use stainless steel staples.

Re: Power staplers
I bought this air stapler at lowes for interiors. Works great for me
Does both staples and small brads which is perfect.... The brads shoot through the material and holds the backing board. I didnt have to pull the materia lback over the brad heads Last edited by Mitch//pa; 04-25-2017 at 05:48 PM. |

Re: Power staplers
Have never found the electric to be worth a damn. Would recommend senco or rainco. As mentioned in post #2 cut the pressure back. I had two commercial upholstery shops and was never personally fond of SS staples. The ones I used were always soft but then again I never researched to find a beefier product either.

Re: Power staplers
Double that on stainless staples. You don't need rust on your top next yr.

Monel staples?
I use these on garden fences. They outlast the chicken wire (of course!) Joe K

Re: Power staplers
I bought my air stapler at an upholstery supply shop. It is one of the best tools I bought for interiors.

Re: Power staplers
Monel staples for sure. That's what is used in the marine industry. Much better than S/S.

Re: Power staplers
What are Monel staples made of, if not SS? I am having trouble finding the type of staples (T50, 12mm, 8mm, etc that will work in a HF staple gun). If someone that has a HF pneumatic staple gun could post what Monel staples they use, I would appreciate it. It seems 3/8" long would be about the right length for upholstery and the top on my phaeton - see picture below.

Re: Power staplers
I don't know what staples work in a H/F gun. If it is Arrow T-50 then there are several size monel staples available.

Re: Power staplers
That would be Monel, which is a steel looking variant of nickle, copper, bronze type alloy.
VERY common in pumps, marine, other uses where strength and extreme corrosion resistance is required. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monel I have found T50 monel staples at the common box stores. Other staple variants MAY have monel as an option but harder to find. Right now I'm struggling to fill a 1980s "Craftsman" brand manual staple gun with something that will work. Duofast staples seem to be recommended and ACE Hardware has equivalent "Wide Crown" staples which are suggested online - but not available at my local Ace. There are more varieties/dimensions of staples than stars in the sky apparently. Joe K
