Rear hub install ?? HELP!
My 32 has a 37 rearend, that I've installed 48 style stock hyd brakes on.
My question is:: How hard should the hub be to re-install with the packed bearings and new seals? Tapers are very nice and bearing surface on axle is pristine. Stock axle key is smooth with no burrs and outer end is alightly chamfered. Angled end is to the inside. Key is seated in the keyway. Should it be driven on with a socket to overcome the tight axle key? It wants to go on pretty hard. Wants to get tight with only a couple of threads exposed. Can't get the nut with washer on it. Search turned up zero; lots on hub removal, not re-install. Thanks, don't want to mess something up. |

If you've gotten that far, I would rule out seal or bearing issues. Try taking the key out temporarily and see if it goes all the way.

Re: Rear hub install ?? HELP!
Are the brake shoes draging? Try it without the shoes. The 40 drums slide right on my 32 rear.

Thanks for the tips so far.
I'm using outside mounted drums. Forgot to mention that in the first post. |

Re: Rear hub install ?? HELP!
Somethings wrong. With the shoes de-adjusted the hub/hub should meet the tapered axle with a satisfying thud.
As said, try without the key. There should be a little resistance from the seal, but not as much as you describe. Mart. |

Re: Rear hub install ?? HELP!
I am not sure about 37 but some early axles are too short and drum hits backing plate with a hydraulic conversion. On those you have to modify plate or drum to fit.

John. My stuff was not modified. That problem arises with a Model A rear.

Re: Rear hub install ?? HELP!
NO drum. I've converted to removeable, outside drums.
There were NO backing plates or brakes of any kind when I got the car, only hubs. So it's either the keystock or the seal, as the hubs came off the axles without much effort. Thanks for the suggestions. Does the seal LIP face the bearing (in) or the housing (out). Seems like it should face the bearing to retain the grease. Last edited by hotrodA; 12-15-2016 at 11:06 AM. |

Re: Rear hub install ?? HELP!
I just went through a similar problem. Do you have a short shoe and a long shoe? By that I mean does one show have shorter friction material than the other as all the metal holders are the same. If so, make sure the shorter pad is to the rear. I had mine backwards then corrected them after looking at a diagram on Van Pelt's site. Then the drums slipped on easily. I can't tell you why and am not sure this will help. All I can tell you is this was my experience.

Re: Rear hub install ?? HELP!
Solved it like I should have from the git-go, since they came off the axle.
Just check each component until you find the offender. It was the internal taper in the hub, even though I had cleaned it previously. Made up a spiral emory cloth hone, ran it through a couple of passes and VOILA! I suspect a booger. Just had a case of the DUH's. Thanks for the help. Case closed! Re: Rear hub install ?? HELP!
Always a good idea to lap the hub to the taper. Lots of references to that on this forum. Best done before the seal is fitted, and obviously before the key is fitted. Doing this will ensure a good fit and tell you up front that everything fits and aligns properly.
