Default Another Generator / Ammeter Question

I have been noticing that my ammeter is indicating a 10 amp charge whenever the motor rpm is slightly above idle. It never seems to drop to a lower value as it should when the battery is charged.

As most of my trips are less than 20 miles or so, I have been ignoring the problem.

Is it a likely a defective cut-out? If so, is the diode type the way to go, or should I get inside the original cut-out and try to fix it.

The generator is an original 6V type and the battery is less than a year old

If you have a voltage regulator the charging rate will drop when the battery is charged but if you have a regular cut out it will just charge full all the time. Turn on your lights if you need to cut down the charging or adjust the third brush.

As Charlie S says, the generator is a constant current device, so it puts out what you have set it to independent of the battery voltage.

The purpose of the later technology voltage regulators was to keep the voltage constant.

Does the battery go dead or low? ----if so there is a draw or the charge rate is too low for your use

Does the battery use a lot of water and always is at a very high voltage---if so the charge rate is too high

What's it show with the lights on and engine off?

You may need to swap met wires on the repro ammeter.

Also the charge rate it too high. 2 to 4 amps should work for most people.

I doubt it'll start and run for much longer with that discharge. The ammeter reading looks as if you just turned the lights on.
