Gears For A 53-56 Dana 44 Rear End
I am building a TROG race car that must use Pre-54 running gear. I know that the Dana 44 had 3.07/3.55/3.75/3.92 gears and maybe more. Does anyone know of a good aftermarket gear vender where I can get new ring & pinion for this rear end. I am looking for 4.11 - 5.17 gear ratio. I am also interested in a good used set.

Try calling Randy at Randy's gear supply. You will need the early axles and a carrier to fit the ring you want. These were used in F1 and F100 pickups plus Mercury cars, Ford police cars, and Ford station wagons from 1950 on up into the modern era. The later ones have the larger spline count you would be looking for the older 19 spline axles to stay within the desired era.

Re: Gears For A 53-56 Dana 44 Rear End
rotorwrench ----- Thanks for the lead. I am not sure but I was under the impression that the 49-53 and maybe higher were 19 spline and I do want to stay with the pre 54 running gear. Were all 49 - 53 F1 & F100 built with the Dana 44 rear end & 19 spline?

Re: Gears For A 53-56 Dana 44 Rear End
Dana 44's were used in F-1's and F-100's from '51 thru '56 in pretty much the same internal configuration. '48 - '50 used a Dana 41. All were 19 spline. The ratios available in D44's those years were only 3.92 and 4.27 in F-series, maybe some other brands had other ratios using the same carrier and bearings. Randy's would know.

Re: Gears For A 53-56 Dana 44 Rear End
1950 was a change over year for the Mercury cars & F1 pickups so some early 1950 F1 pickups could still have a Dana 41 & later ones the Dana 44. The change was mid year but I don't know exactly when.

Re: Gears For A 53-56 Dana 44 Rear End
My memory was close but not perfect.
I have a 4.27 set with the pinion marked Salisbury 18449 with 10 spline pinion yoke. Manufacture date of April 1951. Quick search references that number for Dana 44. It is not new but in very good shape. If interested send me a PM, I can send you pics.

Re: Gears For A 53-56 Dana 44 Rear End
Keep in mind the "case break" that is a carrier is for 3.92 and numerically higher or 3.73 And numerically lower. So a 4.11 gear set won't go onto a 3.73 up carrier. It needs to be a 3.92 down carrier.
There are "thick" ring gear types that allow to go with say a 4.11 on to a 3.92 carrier, for some gear sets, some folk use a ring gear spacer to make this combo work. Personally I don't like the spacer idea. I believe Randy does the correct 19 spline carrier in 3.92 up and 3.73 down. Martin. |
