Try the auto club or go to another DMV. I am in California and don't know for sure but there has got to be a way to do it legally (and buying a title is not the legal way).

There are several title service companies that specialize in situations such as yours, such as http://www.getnewtitle.com/.

You will have to most likely do a bonded title, there are numerous threads on the HAMB regarding this process, some may be for other states but the legal process is the same in almost all states. Go to HAMB search bonded title or Illinois title problems, I have personally gone through the process in Illinois, your best bet is to contact the services department of the state DMV at the state office branch or main office, use the web and phone in, ask to speak to some one in the bonded titles department. The people who do this are usually specialists in this process, many others have no clue, be patient. Read the other threads and if you still have questions post them or pm some one.

What state are you in? In Calif there are DMV service co's that come to your house and run the chassis # and if its clear, Presto, you can get it registered.

Hi Russ, Your truck is coming along nicely. I need to get down and see it and your other projects as well. I believe I had mentioned this to you before but can't remember now. I bought a '32 PU from someone in the state of Massachusetts and they did not have titles in '32 so I was told. I got a bill of sale from that owner plus the name, address, etc., of the original owner. Before I tried titling this truck in Maryland, I wound up selling it to someone here in MD. He took the bill of sale that I had gotten and went to a titling service, I believe in Hagerstown. They took care of everything and got a new title for the truck through the MVA. That was about four years ago, so maybe things at the MVA have changed.
I have also found the MVA in Bel Air, MD to be very good people to deal with on some recent title changes and antique tag registration. Good luck!

I'm in Calif. also... One thing about dealing with the DMV here has been consistant... There are LOTS of people with different practices who work at DMV... AND there is NO oversight to insure consistant practice- or fees... I no longer go to my local DMV and accept advice or opinions that don't seem reasonable...
There is, however a unpublished phone number to an office in Sacramento that has provided accurate and quoteable information that I have found to be very helpful... It maybe that other states may have a simialar arrangement... Karl

Please let us know how you make out. I am also in maryland and just bought a car from an estate in massachusetts. They can't find the title, but they are going to try and get a duplicate from the DMV. The car was on the road in the 70's and 80's so I have hope they will have something still.

I have gotten titles for 2 vehicles through an outfit in Alabama that supplies new titles that originate in Alabama. Check with them first to see if your state honors the Ala. titles. Since I got my titles, NJ no longer honors these titles. I think the name of the outfit is Broadway Titles.

Hi Charlie, this is not my first choice , but my DMV says the truck can not be titled because the owner died 25 years ago. The next step in restoration is glass and a rad. I hate to start dumping so much money in the truck and then have to part it out. thanks Russ

Umm...this is a long shot but is there a trail of who inherited the trucK. Does someone still have the papers as the executor of the estate? If so all they would have to do is signoff on the transfer and provide the executor papers. I know it is a long shot but some people never throw anything away.

Do not know now but you use to get a junk title in KY. All you needed were bill of sale or receipts showing you put the car together from junk.

WARNING - This place says it's under $400 - but AFTER you pay they say it will cost another $500 if the car is pre-war. Then to cancel after they more than double the price - another $50.
