Default grille shell removal, 36' pick-up

I am trying to remove the grille shell on my 36 truck. I have removed all the bolts from top to bottom and it's loose. However, I cannot get enough movement to give me an idea what needs to happen next.I should mention that the fenders are in place. Seems to me it should go upward a bit to clear the upper radiator tank and then out the front. Being very cautious as to not damage anything. Is there a certain series of motions to get this out? Is it possible with the fenders in place. Learning as I go here, don't have a book to reference. There is probably a simple answer, just want to avoid costly mistakes.

one thing you have to do is loosen up the fender braces, and there are two small braces that I take out. that job is a pain in the butt

It is a pain in the butt, just keep at it. Don't forget the screw into the top on the radiator, it goes through the hood ornament. Putting it back in is worse.

I got mine off, haven't put it back on yet. I have the impresson that if I took the radiator out from the back first that it would be easier to remove the shell afterward. Anyone here try that?

And yes, what a pain in the butt job.

you need to put the radiator in first then the grill, or take the grill off then the radiator. when the cars and trucks where first put together the grills where on then the fenders. it can be done I have done it twice

Brendan- Thanks for the tip. Loosening the fender braces makes all the difference. With them being tight, it's as if the shell is being pinched in place. Becoming an expert at working on nuts and bolts with a crust on them. I am finding quite a few square sided nuts in this truck. Anyone else have this experience? Trying to save and re-use all hardware when possible. Not sure these are factory equipment or put there by past owners. Now I can replace the rear fender braces.

Does loosening the fender braces help when doing a grille on a 36 fordoor?

I put a motor in a 36 cabriolet for a friend. I did not take it out, so putting on the grill and the hood was a challenge. I had to take off the generator and the distributer and remove the radiator hoses, and then unbolt the radiator, and push it as close to the motor as I could. then I could get the grill in. I don't know if I did it right but I got it in. there is a big difference between a 36 passenger car and a 36 pickup the way a grill mounts

Thanks. I had a heckofa time getting the grille out when I worked on the car over the winter. Had the grille, radiator, generator and distributor all out. On reassembly I expected another hassle but the grilled amazingly just set right in. Afterwards I realized the piece that came in a box of parts when I bought the car goes on BEHIND the grille. Some day I'll pull the grille back out and put that part in.
