Default calculating transmission gear ratios

When calculating transmission gear ratios there are two gear sets involved, the cluster reduction from the input shaft and the ratio between the cluster gear and its driven gear. Are the input/cluster ratio and the cluster/driven gear ratio added together, multiplied, or? At issue here is a mid-'50 Ford 3 speed. Reasoning tells me that they should be added, but then I question myself. The input gear is 17 tooth, it's cluster mate is 24 tooth for a 1.41 reduction. The cluster second gear is 22 tooth and the mainshaft 2nd gear is 23 tooth for a ratio of 1.05. How do I figure what the 2nd gear ratio is?

I need a psychiatrist.

Divide each gear pair then multiply them together.

Make sure you do each the one the right way around -

In other words in this case 24/17 times 23/22.

Driven gear first, driving gear second, in each pair then multiplied together.

Mart.
