Default shut off valve packing install

can this packing be installed without removing valve from tank?

closing the valve lever has very little resistance but seems to hold the
gas back , so i think new packing is nesessary. have removed line
between valve and sed bowl but afraid to disconnect valve from
tank in case it damages threads or worst. 30 t sed

You might be able to if you are very limber, can lay on your back or what ever...might want to consider to drain the tank first before you attempt it if you had not thought about that first. If not and something goes wrong...well, you get my drift.

When using one wrench to unscrew the valve you put a lot of side force on the valve. It's best to use two wrenches 180* apart, or if you must use just one wrench grab the valve and wrench with one hand to try to take some of the side force off as you push the wrench around with the other hand.

If you're going to remove the valve, have a bucket ready to catch the small amount of gas left in the tank. Also, disconect the battery.

When you have the valve removed, put a new pencil filter in. Their only like 3 or 4 dollars.

Fredski,
If you're not concerned with originality, hardware stores offer a perfect fit, petcock type valve, that never fails for under $4.00. Take your old valve for a sample & don't forget to install the standpipe filter in the top of the valve!! It is a GODSEND!! Bill W.
