Exhaust Rattle
Now that I finally have my 1930 CC Pickup running well, I am cleaning up a few cosmetic issues and chasing down rattles. One of my major noise generators is my exhaust pipe. Although the engine is on new motor mounts and runs smoothly, the pipe rattles just behind the passenger seat. There is lots of slack - I can slide a pencil between the pipe and the clamp. The clamp, which seems original, complete with cotter pin and castle nut, is snugged up at tight as it will go. My question is: Can I put on a smaller, tighter clamp or put a homemade sleeve between the pipe and existing clamp to act as a spacer and allow snugging it up? Does the expansion / contraction require the sliding of the pipe back and forth in this clamp? Thanks.

Re: Exhaust Rattle
Bratton sells a clamp with insulation stuff on the inside. This is used with the Stainless system.

Re: Exhaust Rattle
The clamp was not meant to be tight on the pipe. It's a slip fit on the tail pipe to allow expansion. You might try the suggestion as posted above or see if you can use one of the exhaust pipe hangers with the rubber section.

Re: Exhaust Rattle
Those clamps with the insulation inside are worthless. I put a new one on and thje insulation was gone after 1200 miles.

Re: Exhaust Rattle
I know some of the repro mufflers have pipes smaller than original. My Aries muffler and original clamp fit well together.

Re: Exhaust Rattle
Why not just take the old hanger and crimp it with apair of channel locks til it fits a little tighter?

Re: Exhaust Rattle
I have crimped some. Perhaps should be more aggressive. Was concerned about eliminating all movement in order to absorb engine vibration and movement but maybe the distance from the engine midigates this issue.

Re: Exhaust Rattle
Don't crimp it balls tight but just so it connects or snug and it'll work fine.

Re: Exhaust Rattle
I had the same rattle problem on my 30 CCPU. Tried the insulated clamp without success. Finally decided to try and make an insulated rubber hanger for the clamp. I got one of those universal hangers and just used the hook and rubber insulator bolted to my hanger. It uses the same mounting hole as the original clamp and holds the tailpipe at the correct height. NO MORE RATTLES!! Here are a couple of pictures:

Re: Exhaust Rattle
As stated, that bracket should be a bit loose.. So I just use a piece from a welding glove and barely snug the hanger.. Its been at least 20 years..

Thanks, Al. I'm a bit of a MacGuyver, so I think I'll give your homemade bracket a try.

Re: Exhaust Rattle
I used 1"x .125" soft steel and twisted it in a vise with a large adjustable wrench.

Re: Exhaust Rattle
I solved the same rattle on one of my cars by wrapping the pipe with masking tape (only one layer), then filling the gap with silicone. When the pipe got hot, the masking tape let go but the silicone withstood the heat. The result was a nice silent support that the pipe could slide through as it heated and cooled. Plastic food wrap instead of the masking tape would also do the trick.

Re: Exhaust Rattle
I did do this, generic exhaust pipe hanger from O'Reilly's. Bent it up and over just like the picture, Some of the best Model A money I've spent! $3.50 works great.
