Default Original Model a crankshaft material

Were the original crankshafts cast or forged?

Forged you can see the process in some of the early rouge plant footage

All T, A, B, C and V8 cranks to about 1934 (?) were forged.

The good news is forgings are very strong with superior fatigue life due to their continuous micro grain structure. The bad news is machining a forging ruins its grain structure continuity which causes stress risers and reduced fatigue life. Castings are typically not as durable as forgings, but grain structures are not an issue in castings.
Castings allow more complex shapes which makes them less expensive to manufacture. However, metallurgy plays a larger role in the ruggedness of castings.

the early crankshafts are forged, later cast out of heat treated EE steel , the blueprint has a note that the forged crankshaft is machined to the tolerance as the cast

Hmmm Kurt, I'm not sure that is what that is saying. I read it to say that on that particular print, all dimensions on this revision are to be the same as what is found on A-6303-A1 and 6303-A2 Forgings drawings. I don't read that comment to say this is not a forging but only to say that the machining department needs to refer to all previous prints in case of a question or discrepancy.

Additionally, because this drawing was just a final clean-up of other revision drawings, you would need to refer back to EI #s 12200 and 17014 to find what changes were being made.
