black sooty plugs can also be caused by reversed coil polarity. I was having extremely sooty plugs and corrected the polarity--problem solved

This may help in determining what is happening as well as a lot of information on the A in general. http://modelabasics.com/carb%20basics%202.htm

After starting the car where do you set the timing lever on the column?

Helpful advice all. I'm still not sure my GAV is working correctly. Turning it doesn't seem to effect anything.

Can someone explain the difference between the GAV and the idle control on the column? I mean, why does the car have/need both?
