Default 1939 ford VIN number

My recently purchased 39 ford 2 door deluxe has an incorrect VIN # on the title. The # starts with 8--- ; however, all 39 fords should start with 18---. They missed the 1 and due to age were probably not able to see it. Is there more than one place to get the VIN # on 39 fords? Jon Laing

Easiest place I have seen. Is in the frame rail kinda by the stearing box. I think it's on the frame a few more times.

Just above the inspection cover for the transmission, on flat surface , if the transmission is the original to the car. The other locations are not accessible with the body on the frame. This is not a major problem, if the remainder of the title number matches the car serial number, don't bother getting it corrected.

Jon,
Check out this link and be sure to scroll down.

I think you should be able to find it on the left front rail. I had to scratch around for a while on my 36 to find it. It was in a little different area on my 35.

Good luck.

The 1 is probably there , but was stamped lightly at the factory and over time rust , etc. has obliterated it.

Actually, I believe that a correct serial number (VIN), as stamped into the frame, for a EFV8 should start and end with a large STAR, then the 18..

There are some postings and internet articles you can search for potential techniques to make the serial number more visible or readable.
I have had some limited success using a brass or stainless wire brush and a rust penetrant like PB Blaster or WD40 to "polish" and clean the surface. Wipe it clean and experiment with light coatings to create a sheen effect and use an LED flashlight at just the right angle and you may be able to see the lightly stamped numbers.
I haven't found the leading *(star) on a 35/36 frame but haven't had a non rusty frame either. I did find it on 38 and later frames I have inspected when the number was legible.
I haven't seen an * on any old titles or registrations but the "-" seems to be included.

That is interesting. I have a 35 truck and a 36 coupe. Both have the leading 'star'. More interesting is the 35 has the newer version where the one looks like an 'I'. The 36 has the older version where the one looks like a one.

Also, at least in Florida, my 36 VIN was submitted as 18-xxxx but the title came back as 18xxxx. So no '-' in the title. I haven't got the 35 title back yet so we'll see what that one says.

We have a friend, customer, who moved to Tenerife and Spanish Customs is requiring build information for his 39 Ford. Is there anyone out there who can decipher information from the identification number? 185031648 as per his Maryland DMV title.

It's 18-5031648 per Ford serial number lists. The 18 means equipped with an 85 h.p. V-8 engine. The serial number should be on the frame rail near the steering box and on the transmission as well. Check out vanpeltsales.com for some great information like the above mentioned.

Jay, all the number means is the sequence the engine and trans assembly came off the line. Before they even went into a chassis or body. The serial number on a 39 has no information about body style or options or paint.
