Default Zenith choke rod adjustment question...

When turning the choke rod CW, clockwise, how far should it be turned for
a 'starting' adjustment location prior to starting my A.
I can turn mine CW to the point where the engine will sputter and a
quarter turn or less CCW will 'restart' it again.
However, it is not a smooth turning of the knob.
I need to 'help' turn it a bit to cause it to quit.
Les Andrews' Troubleshooting and Diagnostics handbook
notes turning down the gas adjusting needle too tightly will result in the needle becoming grooved and the seat enlarged making it difficult to obtain a proper mixture.

My memory wanders at times like this.

What is the history of the carb? newly rebuilt using replacement parts, new to you, or unknown?

I had it rebuilt by The Tazman about 3-4 yrs ago with air-channeling to use my air filter in the dusty tri-state area here in AZ.
My A runs runs fine on my neighborhood streets. I get up to 35mph or so and it runs smooth.
Couple mths ago I had a starting problem and removed the gas adjusting needle, drain plug, gas line and re-installed them all.
My starting problem turned out to be improper timing with my new Nurex tool.
I re-timed it the Les Andres way and it ran fine.

Contact the Tazman first. Sounds like the GAV stem is binding to the GAV housing.

Bob,
The Tazman is no longer in the carburetor business.
Last conversation with him he recommended Bert's for carburetors.
I wouldn't be comfortable taking apart my carb and putting it back together in one piece.
Thanks for your replies.

If I read the OP correctly, you need to turn the GAV CCW about one full turn when starting the motor. Then after running for a few seconds or more, slowly close the GAV, clockwise until it is open about 1/4-1/8 from fully closed. If you had advanced the spark, you will hear the engine smooth out at the correct setting.

Right, but I have to open my GAV 1 1/2 turns for about 30 seconds, then start closing it down.
The second the engine starts I pull the spark half way down for my stock engine.
