Can someone identify this car
A friend has this photo of his grandfather (the local publican on the left) and the town's chemist maybe. One of them looks proud of the new car.
Anyone know what it is? Last edited by FlatheadEric; 12-22-2021 at 12:55 PM. |

Re: Can someone identify this car
It sort of looks like an early Buick from the radiator cap. Maybe petehoovey will enlarge it for us.

It's a 1930 Pontiac.

Re: Can someone identify this car
The Number plate is correct for 1930 to 1931 NZ registration year -so I suspect is earlier than 1932

Re: Can someone identify this car
It is a 1930, the two piece face bar was used until that year. 1931 and later Pontiacs went to a one piece face bar.

Re: Can someone identify this car
That is a fascinating comparison. Thanks Pete for providing that modern photo. Of note is the camera angle is nearly the same. In comparison between the then and now is the sign "Harbour View Hotel" is larger covering the upper column capitals, the windows have been replaced and there has been a deck railing added. I'm sure there have been many other changes through the decades. I'd like to have a beer in the Verandah Bar. What would be even more fantastic is if a modern photo could be taken with the same car in the photo. I wonder if anyone in NZ has a 1930 Pontiac?

Re: Can someone identify this car
Yes that is our local watering hole as it is now. I live about 500 meters from it and look down at it from our house. The front verandah is very popular with locals and weekenders and as the name suggests it overlooks the Raglan harbour. I often cruise past it in my 38 Fordor (slowly of course) and get plenty of thumbs up. Nice feeling...

Re: Can someone identify this car
Parking in front of it is at a premium this time of year as Raglan is a summer holiday destination. The hotel has just been taken over by new owners in the last month and I am sure that they will be keen to get some global advertising.
I will talk to them and see what I can do. |

Re: Can someone identify this car
I agree with Karl, that plate is correct for 1930/31.
The number is right up there (they only went as high as 177,800) so would probably be mid 1931 as the new series plates came in mid year. |
