Default Small Town NZ

Recently attended annual Hawskswood Hill Climb. The 35 Coupe has been around for many years and was running in Sundays event. 39 Coupe was the backup/support team,
thats me. This picture taken just off main road. This small garage has just reopened again after many years shut. In its past life it was the garage, engineering workshop, blacksmiths shop, of a small rural farming community. Present owners plan on turning old workshops into old style workshop display with hopes of locating past items which may have been used.

Great picture. Yes Joes coupe is legendary in New Zealand as is Joe and all the rest of the Gilman family.

I love this picture. So sad that a good old fashioned gas station that fixed cars and sold tires is for the most part, a thing of the past.

Beautiful picture! Makes me want to live there. Maybe just down the road a bit. Is the cost of living comparable to the United States? Occasionally driving the backwoods in the Midwest I come across an old filling station similar to that. When I was in high school in the early 1960's there were many gas stations all round town and nearly all did some form of mechanical work. Now in our "city" of 25,000 we have none. I don't know how a young boy can grow up right! LOL I don't know if all the education I received hanging around them was what my parents wanted but it sure was fun to me.

Holy hell good to see a Challenge Service Station still pumping...thought they all died when Caltex bought them all up.

Kiwi you don't know if Phil Gillman (who I used to work with) is related? He came from the West Coast, Greymouth or Hoki I recall. Was a butcher by trade before becoming a TO with the MOT and retrained as Police (long prior to merger in 92)

Checked with Joe and can confirm Phil Gillman is a relation of theirs. His fathers brothers son. A cousin. He has not seen him for many many years.

Thanks Phil. Always wondered if they were related because of the Coast connection. Phil Gillman as far as I know still lives in Lower Hutt not far from me, where he has been since he was an Instructor at the old Police College in Trentham (when I went through 46 yrs ago). He would be knocking on 80 now.

New Zealand is an amazing place to visit. I have been lucky to attend three NZ V8 National meets and have had a wonderful time at all three.

My old man had a 38 coupe in Alexandra back in 74-75 that I'd dearly love to know where it is and who has it now. There cant be too many around. His name was Kerry Hubbard. Photo in my albums.
