Drive through Chicago in the early Forties
Take a look at this Video of cars driving through Chicago in the early Forties.
I know that the Video says Thirties, but as you watch it, I can see a 1942 DeSoto as one of the cars shown. Early on, there is a 1936 Ford with the Accessory Chrome Trim, as well as 1933 and 1934 Fords. It is not too long, but very enjoyable for old car guys to watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?fbclid...ature=youtu.be |

Here is a picture from that Video showing the 1936 Ford Cabriolet with the Pines Trim. It is a very enjoyable short Video and worth taking the time to watch it. |

Re: Drive through Chicago in the early Forties
I actually think there are two different film segments, one from the thirties and one from the forties. If you watch carefully, there are no cars newer than the mid-thirties up to almost the one minute mark. After that, there are a lot of forties cars. In addition to the DeSoto, I saw Plymouths, Chevrolets, and others. At 3:09, there is a '41 Ford parked by the curb.
Good clip, though. |

Wow, that's really nostalgia. Seems like staying in your lane was challenging.

Re: Drive through Chicago in the early Forties
Seemed like every driver just went where they wanted without signal lights or hand signals.

Re: Drive through Chicago in the early Forties
The first segment is Chicago, appears to be southbound traffic on Michigan Avenue. The second segment in the 40's appears to be New York City.

It also looks as though "jaywalking" was the national pastime.

Re: Drive through Chicago in the early Forties
"Times Square Hardware" and "Times Square Motors" are prominent when the traffic has stopped at about the three minute mark

Re: Drive through Chicago in the early Forties
That traffic looked crazy. One of my high school classmates, in the mid 60's, had a '42 Desoto Fifth Avenue 4 dr sedan. Boy, that thing was opulent: covered head lamps, cigarette holder/dispenser in the center of the steering wheel and gobs of legroom in the back.

.
1936 Illinois plates in the first segment. Sign for "Times Square Motors" in the later segment. DD |

Re: Drive through Chicago in the early Forties
That's the later segment: New York city ("New York city? Get the rope!")
But what's that trike thingy? Cushman? Were other motorcycle companies making light delivery vehicles back then? Or does that look home made? Last edited by JayChicago; 02-26-2021 at 10:24 PM. |
