Isn't it better to keep the coil wire as short as possible by mounting coil on engine?

My car has a coil on the firewall and a crab distributor. It runs good. My 32 4 cylinder still has the stock coil mounted on the INSIDE of the firewall.

Thank's for the replies. It probably is better to keep the wire as short as poss. However, I'm converting to 12V and plan on an MSD blaster coil W/the best quality wires I can find. I'd like to keep the area around the pumps and altenator clear and snag free.

Was thinking on the drivers side firewall, somewere near/below my voltage reg. Just to the left of my patent plate. Thats why a picture say's a thousand words

Moved mine from the firewall to the passenger side front. Was told a few years ago by someone at Mallory that the coil wire should not be longer than 20 inches or so.

I installed a coil on a customer's 40 standard street rod w/ sbc, in that round relief in the center of the firewall. It fit really well and looked trick. We even ran his coil wires to the distributor through the holes for choke and throttle rods. It gets lots of compliments.
