Open trailer specs?
What are the specs I am looking for for a dependable trailer to haul a model B tudor. What are these going for used. Recommendations + - between metal and wood and those two metal ramps and open in the middle type. Not looking to go cheap but don't want to overkill it. I will only use it three or four times a year (unless a B will fit in a horse trailer...LOL). Any issues with hauling with a half-ton with electric brake set up?

Re: Open trailer specs?
Jim, I have a new Featherlite aluminum trailer that I have pulled to Abilene, Ks to rescue my '50 Ford and I hauled my '40 pickup to Saratoga Springs last week, both with a '99 F-150, no problems.

Re: Open trailer specs?
Jim, If you are coming to the club meeting tomorrow night, you can look at it because I am delivering a pickup to my daughter in Baltimore tomorrow afternoon and returning to the meeting on the way home. I think it is 7000 #, without looking at the label.

Re: Open trailer specs?
The BigBee trailer I have used for 25 years for Model A, T, V8, and general hauling is a steel, square tube, tandem axle with 5 lug wheels, brakes on 1 axle, and wood floor, straight, no beavertail. Uses heavy removable steel ramps. It is 16' long and 6 1/2' wide. This trailer has side rails which are 18" high, tapered to the rear. The side rails are a plus for securing and containing irregular loads, but limit you hauling a wide vehicle and sometimes you have to crawl out a window. Not a problem with Model A & T however. Might not haul a long Chevy Suburban, but I have hauled large vehicles with it. I recommend breakaway brakes. I intend to add brakes for the second axle. Square tube steel is less expensive than aluminum, much more substantial than cheap angle iron trailers. Pulls well and does not wear tires. Get 8 lug wheel axles for heavier loads, but this is fine for car hauling.
When you have a trailer you never run out of friends. Works for me! Dick |
