Default Torque Tube on a 39 1/2T

Had my gears changed to 3.54's and the pinion is 6spline. My original tubes shaft is 8. Now I have a complete 40's T-tube and 6 spline shaft that has a grease fitting @ the center.

Now before I had changed the gears I had cleaned and PORed my original T-tube, but it has no grease fitting. I'm thinking (thats why I'm asking), Can I pull my 8spline out and install the 6spline I just do not want to restore the 40's T-tube if the original one will work.

Can you please tell us what the old drive shaft looks like? Is it tubular and tapered at both ends?
If so that is the 35-36 style and the corresponding torque tube does not have a center bearing or a grease fitting.

If You lay the old and new driveshafts side by side, and they are identical, except one has 6 splines and one has 10 (not 8), then there is no reason why you could not use the 6 spline shaft in the restored housing.

You have the parts at your disposal, look at them closely and tell us if you think it would work.

If the torque tube you want to use does not have a grease fitting, have a look to see if there is a centre bearing. If no center bearing, then you cannot use a shaft that is designed for one.

Have a look and tell us what you have.

Mart.

Sounds like someone put an earlier rear in your pick up. If your old drive shaft is a solid straight shaft it needs the center bearing or it will wip. The older drive shaft is larger and tubular. If there is a center bearing there is a grease fitting to lub the bearing. I believe all 39's have the center bearing. My 39 P/U has one. G.M.

Thank's Mart and George. Yes I did mean ten on the pinion and yes there is a diff. in the shafts @ the center bearing area.

I was just being lazy. Will keep the older T-tube as is and will clean up and restore the 40's T-tube. Again, I have a question and now I'm wiser for asking. Thank's
