Engine Noise Again- Help-Opinions?

Took the old girl out for a drive earlier today but at the end she got really noisy. In December the camshaft gear was replaced as it was well worn. Now I've seem to have another set of noises - ugh....


Took a video - hope the audio represents it well. I wish it was a bad water pump but I don't think i'd be that lucky.

buy yourself a cheep engine stethoscope from amazon probably around $10. or even a hardwood dowel stuck in your ear and held to the engine block. you may be able to isolate the area the noise is coming from. although it takes a bit of learned experience to diagnose this way.
in the les Andrews book there is a noise diagnoses chart that may help diagnose.
if you don't have that book maybe someone can post a picture of that page for you.
I'm am currently not able to post that for you.
even with that there is always the noise that is not in the normal trouble shooting guide.

so many opinions on engine noises you just have to eliminate them one by one.
sometimes only a teardown will show you and even then it can be missed.
i have had the same engines apart a few times just trying to find weird noises.

Take the fan belt off, that will eliminate some items.

If it may be this here is my question. I had the oil pan gasket replaced recently. If the oil pump retaining screw was tightened against the pump so it didn't fall out, and wasn't loosened up after, could that be it, or potentially the oil pump failed?

"Oil pump retaining screw" is a temporary thing, it should be removed and a proper plug (1/8"mpt) installed.

Model A oiling system works on oil FLOW (volume of oil) not Oil Pressure.


Then gravity and splash does the rest.

If you think it’s oil pressure. Remove the bolt and crank the engine to see if oil comes out. Or a fitting and hose, so it’s not pumped on the floor. Remove the side cover and check for oil or loose valve clearance.

I agree with Ronn.

I will give you my standard advice for a noisy engine. Marvel Mystery Oil in gas, 20w-50 HD oil in pan along with STP Blue bottle as last half guard.

Give it a couple of miles to quite down. Don’t start taking things apart.

I don't know. Heck I thought it sounded like an exhaust leek. Try what WHN, and Ron advise. If it is internal it is already ailing. Taking the fan belt off and starting it is easy, so why not give that a try. The other guys in your local Model-A chapter are a big resource.

Removed fan belt and same level of intensity of noise an clanking kept up consistently. I then removed the oil pump retaining screw and oil did fly out of the hole with a fair amount of pressure - but I think what came out may be even more troubling?? The sparkly silvery output is a bit more troubling?? I'm thinking I may be in a bit more trouble than first thought.



Thinking I may want to do an oil change tomorrow to ensure the same consistency of silvery output. The oil had to be changed when the oil pan was replaced in December, and the oil level has been consistently full whenever I took her out for a ride. I'm just thinking this may be a bit more catastrophic.....

It sounded like an exhaust leak to me too. But looking at the color of the engine oil I am concerned that something inside the engine is producing tiny metal flakes. When you change the oil, run some through a coffee filter or a milk filter if you can find them. See if the particles are attracted to a magnet. The oil does not look good. Wrong color. Stop running the engine until you find the problem. It may take a complete tear down.

When running the video at 1/4 speed it sounds like a gear noise so check to see if the new cam gear is wearing funny. It could be that 1/4 speed makes all knocks sound like a gear noise, I don't know.

What type of gear was it replaced with? I would suspect aluminum as that's what the "stuff" in the oil looks like.
Was the crankshaft gear inspected at that time?
What condition is it in?

The previous gear was a non-metal gear. It had wear marks in the bolt holes (elongated), but didn't appear otherwise damaged. I just thought about what you said - aluminum so definitely won't pick up with a magnet. I'll have to give my guy a call on Monday.

I bet it is the cam gear. There is a button that goes over the spring the keeps the cam from walking out of it's preferfed line. Wonder if that spring is broken?

It could also be that the spring is not strong enough. I had to add a spacer under my spring.
