Default 34 banjo with tube shocks?

Removed the bed from my 34 pickup today to begin getting frame ready to repaint. I see the banjo rear has tube shocks on it. Top shock mount is welded to x member and bottom bracket is bolted to bottom of axle housing. Was this common practice back in the day?

this was a pickup my dad had back in the day. It’s got 59a flathead, 39 trans, and hydraulic brakes.
