Default Quiz for a 60 MPH all day long car

A guy is driving a Model A on a 20 mile trip.

He does 60 MPH for 10 miles, then the engine get a bit hot, so he slows and does 30 MPH for the last 10 miles.

What is his average speed over the whole 20 mile trip?

Agreed. The math:

60x10 = 600
30x10 = 300
total 900

900 divided by 20 miles = 45 MPH Average

I have been fined by an average speed camera and disputed the figure.

It has taken a day and a half of research and I still do not quite believe the correct figures, but keep chiming in .

This just tells me not to drive 60 mph and get the engine hot, just drive 45 mph [ or whatever it comes out to be] for the whole trip. [ smiley face]

Pooch, you were obviously not driving Kevins car. Because Kevins car goes 60 mph all of the time!

The average speed is 40 mph.
10miles at 60mph takes 10 minutes
10 miles at 30 mph takes 20 minutes
Total time is 30 minutes.
20 miles in 30 minutes gives an average of 40 mph.

Synchro, correct.

Trip takes 30 minutes.

If you were doing 45 MPH you would travel 22 1/2 miles.

The maths formula is T = d / s, where T is the time in hours, D is the dstance and S is the speed.

I am still finding it hard to get my head around it.

The average cams I got done on are 14.1 KM apart.

8.1 KM is 100 KPH, 1.1 KM is 80 KPH, 4.9 KM is 40 KPH.

I thought surely the average speed should be over 70 KPH at least more likely 75 KPH.

The figure I was done on was exceeding 65 KPH , THE AVERAGE SPEED for this section.

I would do exactly the same before my research.

I reckon 45 MPH should be the average.

You are going 15 MPH faster in the first 10 miles, then 15 MPH slower in the next 10, so it should average out, but it don't.

I am still going to court to fight it, as the bastards have refused to give me any leniency, after me stating that I have had only one ever penalty which was a minor speeding fine in 1983 in my entire history of driving since 1969.

Hey pooch,
To me HERE, the whole thing about getting 'pinched' over top speed of 45mph on a 20 mi trip ...sounds odd !
'They' changed the speed limit on the street going past my home, to 45mph ! This is in a highly trafficked residential neighborhood. And, no one seems to care, so traffic 55/60 regularly on this street.
So, you in a highly populated residential area doing your trip of 20 mi ?
Always thought that your land was so vast that you would have to go fast to get anywhere in a timely manner
Traffic cameras here are money makers, catching those who 'run' red lights, not speeders per se.

I didn't get the correct answer because I spotted the obvious answer (45MPH) was sucker bait. It was just too easy to arrive at that answer! Cute Riddle!

In theory, for a math problem, his Model A averaged 40 mph.

But in reality, since his Model A had mechanical brakes and probably a non-lightened flywheel, he could not go from 60 mph to 30 mph instantly, and he maybe averaged about 45 mph for about 6.39 seconds while slowing down, depending on the weight of his tool box and which way the wind was blowing.

Guy should get credit in that his speedometer and odometer were working to report these exact mileage figures ..... plus appears he did not burn up his engine.

Terry, not a very cute riddle when the bastards want a $341 fine and 2 demerit points.

AND the 40 KPH section says Trucks and Busses speed limit and I was driving a winnebago.

Any idea what the two readings were recorded as? You were running 60 mph for 10miles which is 16.093km. Possibly the two readings were taken within the first 10 mile section (i.e. 60 as the first reading and slightly lower than 60 for the second reading )

I got caught by the math in the early 80's in Maine. At the toll booth you would get a card, and you would pay different amounts depending on what exit you got off at.What I didn't know was that the cards were time stamped too.I was headed up with an empty trailer for a load of spuds, and that truck was pretty zippy when it was empty.I was pulled over after the last toll booth because they told me there was no way I could have covered those 60 miles in 47 minutes legally. That truck topped out at 72,but the limit then was 55.
