Decker steering wheel lock
I believe this is from a 'T', i don't know. Do any of you guys know how this gizmo works? The housing has internal threads around the outer edge as if it screws down onto something.
I would like to use it but i don't have to 'T' column to try it on. It says 'Decker', beneath that is says 'Lock-Steering Wheel' and has patent info etc; the key works fine. Any info would be a big help, thanks oj Last edited by oj; 10-10-2010 at 08:56 AM. Reason: forgot pictures, of course |

Yes it's for a T. I have a very similar one that has a Sargent lock cylinder in it.

Re: Decker steering wheel lock
OJ,
John is correct, it is a T aftermarket wheel lock. The T is very easily hot wired or numbered keys were available everywhere so this was one of the few ways to protect your car from theft. (Colt & Smith & Wesson supplied prety convincing ways as well carried by many people in the T days!) The threaded part would replace the original top of the steering box, short shaft & wheel as shown below. the gear engages with the original planetary gears ( not shown) in the round box just under the steering wheel. |

Re: Decker steering wheel lock
Terrific guys! Now to get me a 't' column and i'll put them together, messrs' Smith & Wesson are still welcome.
I noticed that the unit comes with a warning: 'Never drive car with key in lock' That conjures up an image of accidently locking the steering wheel while turning a corner. Now that would be a 'holy shit!' Thanks guys, oj |

Re: Decker steering wheel lock
Hello,
I picked up this steering wheel from my dad who has a habit of collecting "stuff". No idea what it is for. I am a car guy, but my knowledge is for '60s and '70s. This wheel predates that. I would like to sell it to someone who can use it and appreciate it but first I need to identify it. Any help would be appreciated. Here are some pictures. The wood is in great shape, the (2) Yale keys work. The lock says "Decker Lock Steering Wheel 664636" The spoke casting has an "F" on the back of the same spoke with the lock and an "X" near the hub. Thanks for any help, George Cedar Park, TX |
