2 speed ford-o-matic
Hi Barners,
I've an opportunity to buy 2 speed ford-o-matic supposedly from a 1960 Galaxie. I own a 56 Victoria with the stock air-cooled 3 speed auto. The stock 3 speed is leaking trans fluid pretty hard and I want to pull it out for a rebuild/repair. My question is, could I chuck in this 2 speeder easily to keep the car on the road or will there be irreversible modifications required to install it. thanks in advance. |

Re: 2 speed ford-o-matic
not easily.you need to change the yoke on your driveshaft and im not sure if its the same lenght.you need the flywheel for the 2 speed.not sure about mount.i wouldnt bother unless i was going to leave it in there.

Re: 2 speed ford-o-matic
Most aluminum case 2-speeds were set up for the early small block pattern bell housing for 221/260 engines or light 6-cylinders like early Falcons had. A person would have to make sure it will fit the Y-block bell pattern. The torque convert will have to fit the crankshaft end as well with the correct starter flex plate.

Re: 2 speed ford-o-matic
If I remember correctly, the two speeds came out in 59 and were used for a few more years behind a Yblock.
The earlier fordo's are better in my opinion, was a 3 speed even though normally it started off in second.

Re: 2 speed ford-o-matic
Even if it were easy enough and happened to be a direct bolt-in, have you though about how you would select the gears in the Ford-o-Matic, since you have a manual transmission steering column in your car, right?

Re: 2 speed ford-o-matic
sorry I should have been clearer... I have one of the air-cooled 3 speed ford-o-matics... probably one of the last air-cooled ford-o-matics for 56.
Its does start in "2nd" and shifts to "3rd". first only gets used if you give it the jandle from a standing start or your select it on the shifter. |

Re: 2 speed ford-o-matic
You will also have to add an oil cooler for the trans in front of the radiator, or change radiators to one set up with a cooler in the bottom tank.

Re: 2 speed ford-o-matic
I've run inline cooler attached to the frame underneath the car on two cars with no apparent problems.
