Default 31 Coupe Inside Door Handle

I'm posting this for a friend, the inside door handle on his 31 coupe digs into the door panel upholstery when it is in the relaxed position. Is there an adjustment to keep it away from the door panel somewhat?

Not really because the rod is bent at a 90º angle there where it makes the turn and has a clip that holds it there. If the rod was cut and lengthened, then the amount of travel would be changed and the escutcheon would limit the amount of travel. Is it possible the door panel is too thick with bulk? Maybe the door handle is incorrectly made? I realize the door handle is plated but if it is a repro, maybe the point that is rubbing could be filed down somewhat?
