1939 PU Horn Installation Pix

Hey all,

Does anyone have photos of the stock horn installation on a 1939 1/2 ton pick-up that they are willing to post? My truck has a hideous bracket arc welded to the firewall (poorly) and since I have the engine out I would like to cut it off and put the horn(s) back where they belong.

I don't have one mounted yet, but my 39 and a neighbor's 39 had one horn mounted to the front cross member so it was sort of behind and below the radiator, There's a bracket made of 3-4 sandwiched pieces of steel that mounts between horn and cross member. I can take a picture of that, but likely someone on the forum has a picture of the whole shebang.

I saw a thread from 2010 here that showed the horn below the radiator and facing forward. Thank you for confirming the location, I didn't know if that was original or not. If you have a photo of the mount that would be helpful but I don't want to inconvenience anyone. I will have to fabricate a mount, knowing what it looks like would facilitate that task but isn't strictly needed because I am not trying to restore the truck so much as make it driveable.

My horn is the same as that pictured. As an aside, did 38 and 39 trucks have that splash shield around the horn or just the 38s? My 39 had no shield.

I've just seen this one with a shield. From grill it looks like a '38. I assumed 39's had 'em too, but never saw one, come to think of it.

My 39 had the remains of that splash shield,not usable now but was there originally. Hard to find a replacement so if someone has a spare let me know. My horn and bracket were gone so thanks for posting the pictures,gives me an idea of how it should be.

Thanks everyone, this is very helpful. My 39 has a different splash shield in that, as I recall, it is continuous between the grill and fenders. I assumed it was to duct air through the grill and radiator but would serve to keep road dirt out of the horn.

I,ve seen allot of 38 an 9s and never seen a box/shield like that . good ol Henry,always full of new ideas !

Okay since we have a few 38/39 guys checking this thread.

How about this? anyone else have these brackets on the rear of their truck? I'm guessing they are if a shackle breaks it'll catch the spring and you can get the load home.

That's a replacement superside spring in the previous post. Here is the original for the rear that I took off. I think I counted 18 leaves on it the last time I checked.

I have a 39 PU with that bracket/helper what ever. Don't know anything about it.

my '39 had the horn mounted sideways between the radiator and front cross member. I had to relocate it since it interfered with the 8ba that the PO installed. Don't have a clue if it was factory or not but it had original looking crusty wiring so it appeared factory,

Tinker, those are some cool looking tires on that truck, are they agriculture or DOT?
any more side pics of them?

I believe the brackets are for an overload spring. My '39 has them with the overloads. I'm pulling the bed on my '39 tomorrow to replace the tank and weld on some shock brackets so I'll take a couple of photos of the overload set up.

They are just ndts (non directional tires). Coker military tube tires. I like them all right. 6 ply.

I originally bought them because the were much cheaper then other ply tires and looked good on the truck. They have grown on me .
