40 Standard
attempting to install a LeBaron Bonney interior in my 40 standard coupe, am having a problem with the front windlace or part 1B. This has a piece of headliner fabric on it about 5" wide by 17" long, I'm not sure how much of this gets trimmed, it looks like only a few inches shows. It looks like much of the A pillar is covered by the reveal panel, is it possible these were installed before the dash? Any help would be greatly appreciated, 19fordy are you still there?

Re: 40 Standard
Definitely installed before the dash.
I suppose it could be done with the dash intact by carefully tucking the lace in. I've never attempted to do it that way so no promises on how well it may work.

Re: 40 Standard
Thanks Kube, I figured I better find out before I got crazy with the scissors, was suspicious when I spotted one of those drive nails between the dash and upper hinge that was not accessible. Now if I can get the dash in and out again without scratching and or denting it! thanks again.

Re: 40 Standard
Dennis: Below are photos of that piece. It DOES go in before the dash like "Kube" said. It secures the windlace to the A Pillar. The reveal panel is then covered with material, inserted in place and secured with screws. The reveal panel butts right up against the windlace. I had to "massage" the metal reveal panels to make them fit just right. I think there is a LEFT and RIGHT reveal panel but, it's hard to tell as they seem to fit both sides of the car. The extra material on each reveal panel is is cut off after making a trial fit, making sure you got it right. I saved all the instructions for the coupe interior supplied by LaBaron-Bonney and can email them to you if you desire. Hope this helps.

Re: 40 Standard
19Fordy, thanks, sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words, I have the instructions from LB, however looking forward to the headliner, is the back window in or out when you glue the headliner, and what exactly do you fix it to in front? Thanks again.

Re: 40 Standard
I know it's one for the standard. LeBaron Bonney makes the strap, but not hardware. Found mine on eBay.

Re: 40 Standard
TJ, thanks for the reply, I was hoping I wouldn't have to take the back window out, my car doesn't have a tack strip up front, I bought the car disassembled so I'm not sure what all has gone on, there are some traces of glue, could it be some models are glued up front? Thanks again, what a great resource!

Re: 40 Standard
Dennis, Be sure to leave enough extra material on the front edge of the headliner to compensate for the fact that the headliner material has to rest flat and fit under the windshield visor hardware and reach beyond the upper edge of the windshield sheet metal. Don't trim any of the excess front headliner material until after the headliner material is in its proper location and until after visor hardware is installed. If you forget to do this, you may find that there is not enough headliner material remaining to pull it tight for securing it under the windshield garnish moldings. I found this out the hard way. Here's a few more photos that may help. You can see in photos 4,5 and 6 the extra material left on that A pillar windlace piece you first asked about. The push button in photo 5 is the car starter button. Be patient and keep you hands clean and oil free so you don't soil the material.
I sure hope that other Fordbarners will chime in and offer any corrections or suggestions re: my comments. I am not sure if the visor hardware in painted the correct OEM color. The very last thing I installed was the dome light AFTER the headliner material had been pulled and secured into position. I used a steamer when all done to get out small wrinkles but there are other methods. Last edited by 19Fordy; 10-26-2018 at 10:46 AM. |

Re: 40 Standard
19Fordy once again thanks, I have a lot better idea of the process now, in a little over half a day I have received input from four different ford barners all helpful. This site is an invaluable tool, thanks .

Re: 40 Standard
On the front header take a look and see if you sees mall holes where staples could go. The tack strip was stapled to the header panel. You can just glue it, but you need to use real good upholstery glue so it does not come loose in the future.

Re: 40 Standard
TJ, Yes on the under side of the header are staple holes, you said the tack strip is about 3/4" wide, how thick should it be? Once again thanks.

Re: 40 Standard
Dennis, Don't forget to literally attach the headliner to the metal "hook" piece that extends from the center of the windshield in the center of the roof.

Re: 40 Standard
The thickness is about 3/16" You may have to experiment with the width as it needs to be covered by the garnish. I originally said 3/4", but I could be off a little. It may need to be narrower. I have used pop rivets to reinstall the new strip. I also leave small gaps where the garnish screws go into the header.
