Getting my creation to go 1.5 to 3 MPH
I've built a miniature tractor, the size of a large lawnmower, for my father to putz around in at tractor shows, it has a John Deere LUC 2 cylinder motor coupled to a 3-speed model A transmission and axle.
This thing is way to fast, I've learned that a Model A goes 10 MPH in first gear, I need to get the speed down to 1.5 to 3 MPH and it does not need to go any faster than that. Is there any kind of creeper gear I can install in the transmission or a different ring gear in the rear end, I've recently heard about a Warford underdrive, would that work, would I even be able to find one. My other thought would be to add a gear reducer or transfer case between the transmission and axle or just replace the axle with a gear reducer, but that seems like a ton of work. Anyone have any thoughts or ideas on how to make this work. Your help is greatly appreciated, |

How about a block of wood under the accelerator pedal?

What Randy said. The 4-speed is 6.4:1 in low gear and the 3-speed is 3.12:1.

There were some 4.56 and 4.88 gear sets made for use with Economy tractors that used Model-A rear axles.

a Wortingtom tractor gear reducer--7-1, bolts direct to rear, not real common, probably the cheapest is another transmission

Re: Getting my creation to go 1.5 to 3 MPH
TT or AA truck axles were favored for doodlebugs as well as a combination of two transmissions for ones used as tractors in order to get the underdrive affect. Some just used the AA 4-speed transmission.
The little LUC engine is around 16 HP but John Deere did use them in the small model LA tractor with a draw bar rating of 10 HP. The engine was also used for industrial applications and for non pto versions of the model 12A combines. Last edited by rotorwrench; 08-09-2019 at 01:05 PM. |

Re: Getting my creation to go 1.5 to 3 MPH
Jim Brierley, the picture shown is as far as I've gotten so far.
If I get an AA 4-speed transmission is that a direct fit or would I need other parts as well? I post a wanted ad and see what I can get. Thanks much for all the input |
