'48 F1 rebuild
Howdy boys, I have my grandfathers '48 F1 that he bought new. Yeah! I drove it for a couple years after I got out of the Seabees, until it popped a valve seat ( I think). It has sat for about 35 years now. I plan on finally getting started on rebuilding it to stock. I have a couple questions if I may: Where is a "good" source to buy the parts I will need, other than Mac's (Ecklers) that I would rather not use? I'll need all the rubber, body blocks, water pump rebuild kits, etc. One other question, I also have a '37 V8 that I am contemplating building a speedster with. I'd like to use a truck 4 speed so I will have a "parade gear". What year trans. will marry up to a '37 V8 other than obviously, a '37? Thanks guys, always a joy reading your postings!

Re: '48 F1 rebuild
yeah, Mac's/ eckler is a joke, not what it used to be. I am on east coast someone will talk about wc dealers I just built a 48 F1 or should I say finished one started 14 years ago. I really like it. Did a lot of metal repair to the fenders front and rear came out great. I would recconment new high flow water pumps for the 48 and rebuilt by skip for the 37. any 4 speed truck trans will bolt up, but it is a huge junk of iron, non syncronized but it is you car--maybe get a 4:11 or a 4:44 rear for parade car.

Re: '48 F1 rebuild
Mine has a single wiper, looks like yours does too. Was two an option, or are they early?

My apologies to the many other good vendors I have missed, but I didn't want to "clutter up" this thread. |

Re: '48 F1 rebuild
Dennis-carpenter.com is still a good source for Bonus Built trucks (48-50 models).

Re: '48 F1 rebuild
I do have access to a '50 truck 4 speed. Do I understand correctly, that it will bolt up to the '37 V8? What issues should I expect if I do this? Thanks guys.

Re: '48 F1 rebuild
You will need the hogshead with the transmission. 2nd the above lists and Chucks Trucks. He is a Dennis Carpenter dealer.

Re: '48 F1 rebuild
I believe the truck 4-sp also requires use of an 11" clutch.

Ok, I'll show my ignorance here. Hogshead? Not sure what I'm looking at. Thanks.

Re: '48 F1 rebuild
some of the later model 4 speed trans had a removable front "hogs head" this part contained the clutch release shaft/lever/fork--much desired to use when installing later 5 speed over drives

Re: '48 F1 rebuild
Gotcha. Much like the Model A clutch housing. I knew there was a "hogs head" on a Model T, but didn't know the term was used later. Thanks guys, your help is much appreciated.
