Default QUESTION: How to remove Y Block flywheel

How do you remove the flywheel from a Ford 292 engine still in the car that may have RED Loctite on the flywheel bolts? How do I prevent the flywheel from turning so I can loosen the bolts? Is there a special tool or simple way to hold the flywheel in place? Thank you.

If you don't have access to a compressor and impact wrench then use a socket and breakover bar, and instead of pulling on the bar to loosen the bolts hit the end of the bar with a heavy hammer.

I just take a long fillips screw driver or a long punch and stick it into one of the six clutch bolt holes and turn the flywheel until the screwdriver hangs up on something.

Then find the person that put the Loctite on the bolts and shoot him.

The red is nasty stuff... I used blue when I did a recent flywheel installation.

Try installing a bolt in one of the bellhousing holes. Then get someone using a huge screwdriver to hold the flywheel still, braced against the bolt into a tooth on the flywheel.

What I have always done, is to just stick a tire iron in one of the spokes of the crankshaft damper and then go back and start trying to loosen one of the flywheel bolts. The whole thing will rotate a little bit until that tire iron hangs up on something up front, like probably the front engine steady rest housing. Then you can use a breaker bar with your socket to loosen all the flywheel bolts.

I don't think locktite is a good application for flywheel bolts. They are supposed to be torqued down 75-85 lbs. They aint gonna come loose.

Stolen from the net.

"Here it is from the horses mouth. The Loctite corp..

Q: How can I remove a fastener that is "permanently" locked in?

A: The application of heat is needed to remove a fastener that can't be removed with a hand tool. Temperatures of 325F and above is needed to break down a standard anaerobic, 500F for high temperature Anaerobics. A heat gun or propane torch is commonly used to do this process, and careful disassembly should occur while parts are still hot. Once apart, and cooled, use methylene chloride (Chisel #79040) to remove cured excess material. Always wipe down the fasteners with clean up solvent to remove the wax film that Chisel leaves on the surface."

and remember, on a lot of Ford flywheels, the bolts holes align in only one position. I mark with a dab of paint to realign fast.

I've always used a short piece of chain anchored to one of the pressure plate bolt holes and a bellhousing bolt on the block.
