Default Shock Covers and the Judging Standards

Took apart several shocks last weekend looking for rebuildable ones for my late 1931 Deluxe Tudor we are restoring for a National Meet.
Of the thirteen that had wide bases it looks like 6 or 7 can be rebuilt.

My question is: Do the covers need to be exactly the ones that are shown in the Standards for 1931 or can they be other covers with the indentation around the shaft?

The 13 wide base shocks had 4 covers that match the one in the standards, one HECO in a square with a really wide circular indentation, 6 that match the one shown below in the picture on the right, and 2 that are different altogether but still have indentations.

Thanks,
Ray

I can't be sure without seeing the rest of the shock, but the Houde (HE) cover on the left is the first generation wide eared shock introduced around November 1930. The National Acme cover on the right is later. Although the later patent number 1781127 was granted in November 1930 it didn't show up on shocks until much later.

Don't mix the covers on the shocks unless they are the same brand with identical bases. DO pay attention to the patent numbers as well as their locations.
