Where to get black cotton duck?
I'm trying to get ready to replace my top on my 30 PU. I've got the top material, but I can't find any black cotton canvas duck. Even LeB-B doesn't have it. Does anyone know a source for this?

Re: Where to get black cotton duck?
All coat "canvas" shops carry SUNBRELLA, which is a synthetic "canvas" that looks and acts like canvas minus the rot potential and is highly sun resistant. You can also try DEFENDER INDUSTRIES to purchase it directly at the best prices in the US.

Re: Where to get black cotton duck?
Thanks for the suggestions, and let me address them. I live in Portland, OR. None of the upholstery shops or canvas suppliers here have it. Sunbrella, being a synthetic, will not, in my experience, stretch properly; i.e., like cotton duck; nor does it look quite right to me. And dying the natural canvas presents problems of consistent color. For a show car this just won't do. Defender does not offer a black.
I did find a sailmaker in Portland who had #8 black canvas, and I will go see him tomorrow; but it sounds from his description like a double thickness fabric, and how that will stretch remains to be seen. Thanks again for your suggestions. Anyone else have an idea? |

Re: Where to get black cotton duck?
Found one source online.........Fabric.com. Recently I used an acrylic fabric called Coast Guard (similar to Sunbrella). It got soaked and and full of pollen. I washed with a garden hose and plenty of soap followed with a good rinse. I was surprised as the stiffness was long gone. I applied some 303 weather protectant. It is interesting as the stuff is limp much like a cotton duck and still water repellent.

Re: Where to get black cotton duck?
I got my "duck" from L-B about 10 months ago. I live near them, They had a huge bolt of it then...If they're out of stock, they'll need to restock it, See if you can get a time frame for their delivery of that stock, It's worth waiting for.--Pete

Re: Where to get black cotton duck?
Folowup: The sailmaker had what I wanted: $18/yd for 54" wide. Next week the black denim should arrive from LeB-B, and I'll compare and see what's what.
Thanks to everyone who helped on this. |
