Default Engine Water Inlet

Several years ago I read an article with pictures included, suggested the 1928 engine blocks should have a 7/16" or 1/2" hole drilled through the cast-in baffle located in the block just inside the water inlet port.

From what I can recall, this modification is required to increase the coolant flow through the engine.

The baffles in the later engine blocks 1929 ?? but 30-31 in particular have a larger opening.

Has anyone had experience with this modification, and how was the result ?
Where was the article written up ?

Glenn, there is a article in the Service Bulletins regarding the modification in this area. I don't have them handy or I would list the number. Not sure if it is the same item you saw.

Well two of us now have gone through the Service Bulletins to no avail, and have yet been unable to find the information on the water inlet baffle.

Can someone help us out with this problem please ?

The baffle opening for the 30/31 engines was increased for some reason when they made the casting, so what is the modification particulars for the 28/29 engine blocks ?

Hello Glenn,
You will find what you are looking for in the Marco Tahtaras web site, go to the workshop section regarding over heating.

Thank you very much for the lead Brian. Just looked at the site and that has got the ticket.
As I mentioned in my first post, I also did see somewhere, where someone was drilling a particular size of hole in the baffle, to accomplish the same result. Now I am starting to think....that if a person does not drill a large enough hole, an impinging effect might occur to the side of #2 cylinder wall ? Cavitation ?

My appologies fellows. I missled you with the above statement. I looked in my library and found the article. I printed it in 1999 from Marco's WEB site. I really do miss my mind.
Sorry for wasting your time.

Hey ! Not a problem MAG, I found a lot of other stuff in the Service Bulletins that I had forgot about anyway. I guy needs to run through that book at least once per year to refresh his memory on lots of stuff.

Now...if I can just find where I saw that write-up where someone had drilled a hole through that baffle, rather than a air grinder and carboly tool.

Now where is my hat ?
