Jay, you are correct in that the rubber should not bulge, tight just to the point that it would bulge if tightened more. The rubber does not just compress from the weight of the engine, it is degraded from heat and oil, becoming soft and mushy. Any degree of softness will require attention.

As for packing the u joint, I just take the speedometer turtle off, and pump in the clam shell until its coming out the turtle hole
