Default New vs Used Gears

I am thinking about upgrading my old '39 gear set for newer gearset so that I can use the newer synchros. VanPelts offers both new and used gears. I have read that the new gears are noisy. I can see how bore and width could be measured on used gears, but tooth wear might be hard to evaluate. I guess my questions is: what experience have you had with either of these choices.

No problem with used gears, you do need to inspect them and reject any with large chips and broken teeth.
Small chips and minor rust pits are no problem.
synchro's need to be inspected closely for broken teeth and wear.

I'd say if Mac Vanpelt is selling used gears there won't be a problem gettin them from him. He knows his stuff, he ain't gonna sell you crap.

I agree. Mac is an honest man and will do everything he can to see that your transmission rebuild is successful.

I bought a new first/reverse slider from him last year as part of a rebuild of a '39 tranny. It's working perfectly; absolutely quiet. I second what Scooder and Seth said...if Mac sells it, you can count on it being good.

And let us not forget where Fordbarn came from.

I know it wasn't as fancy as now, but the community was solid.
